Compared with the conventional surgical techniques, robot-assisted surgery possesses numerous advantages including precise manipulation, convenient intraoperative navigation, and possible remote control. Rapidly growing evidence has been reported in recent years favoring the application of robot-assisted techniques in orthopedic surgery. Considering the growing demands from patients for higher precision and more minimally invasive surgeries, robot-assisted techniques exhibit great potential for improving our practice and meeting this expectation from our patients. To date, various types of robot-specialized orthopedic surgeries have become commercially available and increasingly inexpensive. Thus, robot-assisted surgeries are clearly one of the important aspects of advancing the future of orthopedics. Novel ideas, techniques and evidence are critically needed to elucidate this certain future.
The goal of this Research Topic is to provide readers, researchers, and surgeons a comprehensive overview of the state of the art and future perspectives of robot-assisted orthopedic surgery. In particular, the Research Topic aims to focus on the existing developments and future directions in the field of orthopedic surgery robotics. We aim to present novel surgical skills, methods, and experiences to improve robot-assisted orthopedic surgery, and to discuss its impact, especially in the field of intraoperative navigation, intraoperative positioning, training, and assistive techniques.
With this collection, we wish to advance the insights in orthopaedic surgical robots and gather clinically feasible solutions in these various aspects to minimize surgical trauma and facilitate clinical adoption. We welcome Original Article, Review, and Novel Technique notes with Case Series.
